Really inspired by the Flat Classroom Project!! This is exactly the reason why I am doing this online course-to get students to communicate with each other across the planet! I must get Thomas Friedman’s book “Hot, Flat and Crowded.” I have started reading his articles in the International Herald Tribune (I am based in Kuwait).
This was a classic collaborative project using web 2.0 and a topic for discussion. Students were required to link with a partner on the other side of the planet to create;
1/ a wiki page
2/ a personal video including content from their partner.
It was supported by the two teachers who planned the project parameters 6 weeks prior to launching (including methodology and assessment), as well as setting up online judges and a range of awards for students to to win both internally and externally.
Students received the project positively and made constructive comments. The author, Thomas Friedman was approached to offer his own awards, which he did and I thought that in itself, was indicative of the power of the web.
I found the whole concept of wikis great and I am keen to employ them in my teaching. Still feel like I have a long way to go.
